Review by Richmond_Hill ★★★½
A decent transposition of second-tier Christie in which the strengths lie more in the thematics - the world continues to change - than in the rather thin plot mechanics and fanciful setup.
This cycle of adaptations served the title character well, both in central performance (Hickson never less than spot on) and anchoring some of the vague exposition of the latter novels in a beautifully realised never-never England which still had an edge of cruelty and melancholia to offset the vicar coming round for tea.
Circ*mstantial details and the recreation an era are vividly caught, as is the somewhat fruity playing from an archly bitchy Joan Greenwood and an all-guns-blazing Caroline Blackiston - who’d have thought a jam doughnut would cause such lengthy onscreen merriment, but a no-doubt heavy laundry load for the maid?

What was once so reassuring seems to be false, menacing even.
Not enough Joan Greenwood and the broad frame is quite guessable, but this offers a pleasingly sinister look at something rotten hidden under the tea-cosy veil of English tradition and gentility.

Miss Marple (Joan Hickson) spends a pleasant fortnight at Bertram's Hotel in London and solves a murder and breaks up a crime ring. Just an ordinary week in the life of this spinster from the small village of St. Mary Meades. Bertram's is an old-fashioned hotel with an older well-off loyal clientele with a wonderful tea in the afternoon that serves pastries filled with cream or jams. There is one small black and white TV for the entire hotel in the communal room and there are other tucked away comfy rooms for people to talk. Or eavesdrop in high back chairs. Miss Marple's nephew thought she needed some time off from her quiet village and paid for a fortnight at…

Perhaps the strongest Hickson Marple yet, and the first episode written and directed by women. This has cinematic verve –– camera angles and unbroken tracking shots ––that haven't been seen in the series before now, and it's just wonderfully played by the cast.

Miss Marple goes for a holiday at Bertram's Hotel, where she stayed as a little girl and needless to say she encounters mystery and murder. Who is the old priest with the bad memory. Who is the young girl who has just returned from Italy. Who is the dashing foreigner who keeps appearing? After a genteel first half and a more lively second half dear Miss Marple will answer all of these questions. Verdict....good adaptation of an Agatha Christie novel starring the best actress to ever play Miss Marple, the wonderful Joan Hickson.

Irons out the oddities and quirks of the earlier series entries which is both a positive and a negative. The score is actually quite good here but the craft is much more pedestrian.
Wasn’t sure about how almost flustered Marple got in the body in the library but she’s absolutely pitch perfect here.

Geraldine McEwan in this BBC production isn't usually my favorite Miss Marple, but this story is one I enjoy a lot. She revisits the Bertram Hotel where she spent nice holidays as a child.
The story includes a smart maid who works with Miss Marple and the police investigator to solve the mystery and includes a sweet romance. -
