It is officially time to teach those tricky CVCe words! As our beginning readers and writers move past CVC words, it is important to spend time on these long vowel patterns. But there’s a reason we call it “super sneaky silent e”! For some reason it can be one of the hardest patterns for our kiddos to remember.

These CVCe word activities will amp up your phonics lessons and literacy centers and give your students hands on and meaningful CVCe words practice. There are also plenty of freebies sprinkled in!

What Are CVCe Words?

CVCe words follow the consonant + vowel + consonant + silent e pattern. The vowel e is always found at the end of these words, but it doesn’t make a sound – hence, silent e. The silent e peaks around the consonant and scares the vowel into saying it’s name (cake). It’s important to note that this rule only applies if there is only one consonant between the two vowels.

How To Introduce CVCe Words

It is one of my absolute favorite parts of our phonics curriculum when Super Sneaky Silent E makes an appearance! Students are obsessed with this friend.

We spend two weeks encoding and decoding sneaky CVCe words during our whole group phonics instruction. The CVCe word activities in this post are perfect for extending the learning into literacy centers.

What’s The Vowel? CVCe Worksheets

In Kindergarten, our work with CVCe words is really my students first time working with long vowel sounds in context. Even though the vowels are saying their names, it can still be tricky for students when they’ve gotten use to listening for the short vowel sound.

For these worksheets, students will say each word, listen for the long vowel sound, and write the vowel in the box. You can grab this free download at the bottom of this post!

CVCe Word Building Cards

It is so important that students get hands on experience building CVCe words, and these word building cards are perfect for that. They provide differentiated opportunities for students to practice stretching out the words and either building them with magnetic letters or writing them with a dry erase marker.

There are four levels of these CVCe word work activities included, so you can use it with all levels of students:

Read It, Write It, Clip It Cards

These are not your average clip cards, and they’re sure to be a crowd favorite! Students will read the word on the card, write it, and then clip the matching picture.

If you want hands on CVCe word activities, you can have students swap out writing for building with letter tiles or stringing letters beads on a pipe cleaner.

CVCe Word Sentence Unscramble

If you have students who are reading CVCe words and are ready for a challenge, these CVCe sentence unscrambles are perfect! Each sentence has six words that students will unscramble. Then, they will write the sentence next to the matching picture.

I don’t know if you do state testing in Kindergarten like we do (ugh), but fixing and making sentences is a big deal. That’s why I like to give my students as much practice as I can with this.

BONUS – there are editable cards included in this CVCe word center! That means you can easily differentiate and add your own words and images.

CVCe Word Spin, Build, Write

For this free CVCe word center, students will spin a word, build it or stretch it with a marker, and then write it twice on the lines.

Tip – always use black expo markers for writing on laminated activities. It wipes off the easiest!

“If I Can Spell…” Word Family Mats

If I can spell snake, I can spell cake! Spelling CVCe words becomes so much easier once students start to see the similarities between word family words. This CVCe word building center can help.

For this silent e activity, students will look at the first word family word and then build the other words in that word family.

Then, students will write the words they built at the bottom of the mat. Each mat features a different word family for students to work with.

CVC or CVCe Clip Cards

Once students begin working with CVCe words, it can be easy for them to slip back and confuse CVC words and CVCe words – especially when the only difference is a long or short vowel sound and silent e! These CVC or CVCe clip cards are the perfect way for students to practice listening for the difference in these words.

Read and Cover a Match

These CVCe Read and Cover Mats are no prep, but lots of fun! Students will read each word and then cover it with the correct colored cube, counter, Pom-Pom, etc. This is a great CVCe word activity to practice seeing the difference between similar words.

CVCe Word Onset and Rime Cards

When students begin blending CVCe words, it can be helpful to practice blending the onset and time. These onset and rime cards can be use whole group in a pocket chart ad a quick phonemic awareness routine. They can also be used as a small group activity.

Write the CVCe Word Worksheets

Of course, once you begin working with CVCe words, you can never have too much practice with stretching them out and writing them! For these free CVCe word worksheets, students will write each CVCe word on the lines. There are worksheets included for each long vowel and mixed vowels.

Long or Short Vowel Clip Cards

CVCe Word Puzzles

These CVCe word puzzles are a great center activity for when you have just started CVCe words, or for students who are not quite ready to stretch out and write the words independently.

Students will put the letters in order to build the CVCe word and make the matching picture. Having the picture included provides some support and makes this activity self-correcting. After, students will draw and write the words they made.
